2009 Judges Comments
So as promised (over a year ago) here are some of the judges comments from last year. I've scoured my inbox to find them all but the keyword search was shooting me down, so I apologise to the other judges who I have not published. To see the referenced pumpkins scroll down to one of the older posts of 2009!
To be fair I have not identified the judges, in case said comments are found offensive and action is taken. We at the WPCC need to reduce our liabilities when ever possible.
First Place: Pumpkin #6
I just like it. You know? It just says CAT to me. Walking away after biting me because, after the 20 minutes I just spent petting it, he just felt like I needed a few holes in my hand. Damn cats! The only thing that would have put this over the top would be a nice star shaped sphincter carved under the tail to make the experience complete, but who am I to say.
Second Place: Pumpkin #8
"Halloween and dismemberment go together like peas & carrots", my mama used to say. That's why this is my second place pick. The artwork is a bit crude but great work on the lighting, especially the tiger's face!
Third Place: Pumpkin #7
It was a close race between this one and #11, but I chose #7 because I really liked the lines and styling. Sort of a skeletor cat meets Fist Nation art meets Hello Kitty.
Honorable Mention: Pumpkin #3
This has got to be the same joker that carved the lamp last year. Am I right? Anyway, I do appreciate the outside of the box thinking here and the work to pull it off. I just can't bring myself to vote for a pumpkin that isn't lit up though. It seems sacrilegious. Next time light 'er up and we'll talk.
Tips from a Judge to the carvers:
This is a new segment I'm trying out where I offer my humble opinion on ways that carvers might improve their chances for next year.
This year's tip, "Spend the time and take a good photo!" Pumpkins #10 and #12, it's a shame that all of the work you put into your entries foiled by poor photography. I'm sure they're very nice pumpkins but there's no way for me to tell since I can barely see anything in the very dark photos. For god's sake, get adventurous and try some of the other settings on those fancy new digital cameras of yours.
Smart-Ass comments on pumpkins I haven't mentioned yet:
Pumpkin #1: Hello Kitty!
Pumpkin #2: Me thinks me smells a stencil. If not, me thinks me smells an Artsy. Either way...no vote for you.
Pumpkin #4: Where's his tail? Is that it behind him? That candle is freakin' me out! I can't look at it anymore!
Pumpkin #5: "Holly Blursville Batman". Ever heard of a tripod...or a cardboard box for that matter?
Pumpkin #9: Not bad. Looks a bit too Hollywood for my taste though.
Pumpkin #11: I name thee, "Cat on Toast". Nice spooky feel. Good job!
It was very tough this year despite narrowing down the theme and the choice was difficult. However, my choice for number 1 is pumpkin number 11, choice for number 2 is pumpkin number 6, and my third choice is pumpkin number 2.
I loved the reflective element on my ``winner``, and my 2nd choice made me smile - love the symmetry. My 3rd choice of the cat in the hat is just a timeless expression, totally recognizable (due in great part to the carvers artistic talent)
The tiger is quite frankly disturbing. It appears to have eaten a doll or small child. If i am wrong in my assuption please let me know so i can sleep better.
I was torn for my 3rd choice with pumpkin // 3, while a refreshing change from the usual, it somehow left me thinking ``not hallowe`en``
10 and 12 probably lost out because they were hard to see........
As for the rest, it is evident that alot of skill and thought went into the carvings and I congratulate all entrants in their efforts.
first place Pumpkin #3 - this is what i was going to do... but you did it better anyways
Second Place #2
Third Place #4
Pumpkin 5- is that a baseball bat that cat is holding?
Pumpkin #8, you had our vote until we realized that it is a small child the tiger is eating... did you get any trick or treaters?!
