And Here is What the Judges Had to Say in 2010
Thank you once again for being selected as a judge even after my rude and insensitive comments last year. The contest really adds to the fun of Halloween and I enjoy it so.
Pumpkin #14 Nice work. It just screams "Halloween in flight". The bike was an interesting modern twist replacing the traditional horse. I'd prefer a horse but you still get the one spot from me.
Pumpkin #1 I had you as first place until I saw #14. I Liked it but ultimately, dragons just don't represent Halloween to me as much as headless MTBers.
Pumpkin #11 This was a hard choice between it and #12. Again it came down to the fact that a witch will beat a raven every time in Halloween hold 'em.
Honorable Mentions:
Pumpkin #7 I couldn't vote for this because it has nothing to do with Halloween in flight (except that birds can fly [are you listening #2]), but It was the only pumpkin that made me laugh out loud when I saw it. Let's hope that's what you were going for.
Pumpkin #6 (AKA Bat Over Topo-Map) I find it relaxing to stare at for hours on end.
I must say, the contestants did a much better job of capturing their creations on film this year. I'd like to think it was due to the "Tips from a Judge to the carvers" segment I did last year but someone didn't post it until it was too late for you to take advantage of this year.
Smart-Ass comments on pumpkins I haven't mentioned yet:
Pumpkin #2: What the?..Is this supposed to be a bird on a broomstick? News flash, "birds can fly". They don't need magic broomsticks. Where on earth do you by a broomstick that small anyway? Unless of course it's an ostrich or something. If so, it's a horrible rendition of an ostrich. FAIL! (note: if the carver of this pumpkin is under the age of 12 please ignore my previous comments. It's a lovely pumpkin sweetie. What a cute bird...and he's riding a broomstick. How adorable and Halloween-y. I'm just a creepy, mean man who likes to pick on people. You may remember seeing me on pumpkin #5.
Pumpkin #15: This is downright pumpkin porn. Look at where that flying pumpkin has his wingtip! Lets try to keep it PG13 for next year people.
Pumpkin #13: Either those are the longest toothpicks ever made or...DISQUALIFIED!
Pumpkin #4: I can't figure out if those are poorly drawn wings behind him, or if it's steam coming out of his electrodes and you just think you're too talented to be restricted by the whole theme of the contest.
Pumpkin #8: This makes me want Chinese food. Why?
#1 Nice outside the box thinking here. The only thing that could of made it better would of been silhouettes of people on fire running from their homes! Now before I get criticized for saying that (like those judges who had a go at the tiger pumpkin last year), remember its not real people, its just a pumpkin.
#14 Again creative thinking goes a long way. I like the ET meets hell theme going on here.
#6 I think that this contestant might of been smoking something, perhaps a West Coast entry?? This one should be titled "Bat on Crack"! While its is a simple and classic bat theme (no extra points for creative Halloween themes), the extra effort and nice craving workmanship takes it the extra mile. But be careful next year as drugs and knives don't mix well.
Regarding the unofficial entry, if it came from Denmark then perhaps they could be forgiven and a certain co-chair should be criticised for not explaining the rules well enough. However, if its a Canadian entry then shame on you and please proceed to beat yourself with your illegal carrots! And send pictures!!!
Good luck collating the results and hopefully we'll find out the winners within the next year or two.
1 great detail, very creative design.
6 subject is pretty simple but the carving is very well done (really like the glow effect caused but the different depth of the layers). Especially like how the entire pumpkin was included in the design.
3 great movement, feels like she's actually flying
First place goes to pumpkin # 10, it was close between this and the 2nd place, but then I noticed the word Halloween carved onto the bat – that cinched it!
Second place goes to pumpkin # 11
Third place to pumpkin # 4
1 – the detail is amazing! Almost makes you gasp.
6 – the swirls are captivating to the eye and the bat’s eyes are evil
8 – the swooping feather’s enhance the concept of “flight”. Very graceful
10 – nice 3D effect. Bat on top of house/tree on top of ghost
11 – great use of multi level of light to add depth to the witch
12 – stunning black on top of stunning orange. Great even orange light on the whole pumpkin
