More Incredible Carvings!

Image
Our lil' and not so lil' carvers this year have done some amazing pumpkins and I'm super excited to share these with you! Once again they show great progress and emerging knife skills as their terrified parents let them play with knives just once a year! How many pumpkins can you fit in a car?

If they look like clowns, then I bet you can fit a whole alley of them in there! Clowns was the theme this year and I know you wonder how we come up with these themes and if you're picturing a very intense process with a boardroom full of paid consultants then you would be wrong. It's just me and Leanne, and often a cup of tea and taking the dog for a late night walk. Bjorn gives some great input and we settle on something that seems like it will be understood by the judges, but still subject to a bit of interpretation by carvers for a diverse spectrum of entries. I think we achieved that this year again with an eclectic bunch of entries! Judges will have until Wednesday to get their votes in so look for results later this week! This ship has come sailing home...

Hello again devout WPCC Groupies As usual I find myself searching for daylight and motivation this time of the year, and my pumpkin carving enthusiasm melts like the hollow carcass that is rotting away on my deck right now. Thankfully this is a team effort and Leanne is on my case so you don't have to be! She has rallied the judges and compiled the results and we have some interesting findings this year, oh and a winner too.  We didn't go back and check the official records, but we believe this may be the first year that all of the adult contestants have received a vote for their pumpkin, proving that socialism isn't dead after all. I'm just waiting for the year that one of our young carvers takes the trophy out from under our noses with their agile little fingers and over-sized imaginations...  So congratulations to all the carvers for carving well enough to be distinguished from that of a child, and to draw the judges eye.  Congratulations to our back-to-back ...

Arrrrrrrrgh you ready to walk the plank judges??

Do you know how much does it cost for a pirate to get his ears pierced? Me either. But I bet it costs more than participating in this quirky little tradition we have of carving vegetables and taking pictures of them to send to friends around the world! That's right folks, you had all that much fun and it didn't cost you a thing, and I bet the entire time you were rolling those RRRRRRs, telling corny pirate jokes and threatening your friends and family to walk the plank if they kept it up!? By the way, the punchline is "A buccaneer". Every year the theme really brings a lot of diversity to the field and this year is no exception, so much so that I decided to include all the kids pumpkins (5) in with the adults (8) and see if you could even tell the difference LOL. A shout out to the family that flew their pumpkin in to be able to participate, I don't want to hear any excuses from the Southern Hemisphere any more!! More details to come once the pumpkin is ...

2018 Theme

Time to dust off the carving tools, get a pumpkin and get carving!  This year's theme is Pirate Pumpkins .  Same rules as before, see past posts. Where did the pirate put his carved pumpkin? In his front yarrrrrrrrd! And the kids 'competition' will happen again - no theme required and no judging (publicly) but they will get their carvings posted on the world wide web.  If they want to pose with their pumpkins it is encouraged!

Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock

Well I’m not sure if you’ll think we succeeded but this year we really were making an effort to wrap things up a little faster. Suspense can be good but there is also such a thing as too much of a good thing… I guess it did get to double digits in November but just barely! So thank you once again to everyone that carved! This contest always makes me feel a bit like a kid again at Halloween but I’m quite sure I’d stop carving if I didn’t know you guys out there were carving too:) And thank you too to everyone who judged! We had over 50% of you respond before the deadline and some eager back-up judges with some funny comments so there have still been 7 judges submitting votes like the past years. We did have a judge with a new approach this year though – he chose to give out a tie for 3rd place. Creative. Perhaps we will have to add some clearer judging instructions for next year - thankfully the results were the same with or without this 'extra' vote ;) The results are clo...

A Bumper Crop of Carvings!

Hello everyone and welcome back to another fine year of competition! This year's theme of "Animated Characters" drew an eclectic assortment of entries and has really allowed the carvers to let their hair down and stretch their artistic legs. I thought it would be a steady stream of Mickey Mouse and Frozen Princess's but they have proved me wrong! What I love is that there are no two carvings alike again this year!! With entries from Canada, Denmark and New Zealand, we have three countries representing, and if we wanted to get really technical, we did have carvers from England, Australia and Ireland enter as well;) So feast your eyes on these fine looking vegetables and look forward to the results! 1. The Great Gazoo wishes you Happy Halloween, dum dums 2. Eating Nemo 3. Spiderman 4. Minion 5. Fred Cailloux got pumpkinified, yabadabadoo! 6. Scar... plotting to rule the Pride Lands 7. Come with me, where dreams are born & time ...
